Embedding inclusion in museums on a long-term basis. Lessons learnt and best practices from the Inclusion Network

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Thu, 05 Nov

Short description

Although there is a consensus that museums and exhibitions should be designed and realised with inclusivity in mind, putting this into practice remains a challenge. Generally speaking, all institutions face similar challenges. Over a period of four years, seven museums had the opportunity to work together on sustainable solutions for inclusive museum and exhibition design as part of a funded project. The results will be presented by representatives of the museums and subsequently discussed with the audience.

Description

Although there is a consensus that museums and exhibitions should be designed and organised in an inclusive manner, putting this into practice remains difficult. As a rule, all institutions face similar challenges, which is why collaborative working amongst colleagues – for which there is often far too little time in day-to-day operations – is so valuable. Recognising that bringing together diverse experiences and expertise, regular professional exchange amongst colleagues, and the sharing of responsibilities enable innovative solutions, seven museums have joined forces. This collaborative project focused on organisational development towards becoming an inclusive institution. This process was tested as a model and documented. Over a period of four years, the partner museums had the opportunity to work together on sustainable solutions as part of a funded collaborative project. To make the results accessible to museums and other institutions nationwide, a comprehensive handbook of best practice was produced.

The following partner organisations, whose various representatives will be speaking at mutec, were part of the collaborative project: the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, the German Historical Museum in Berlin, the German Hygiene Museum Foundation in Dresden, the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany Foundation in Bonn, the Weimar Classic Foundation, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, and the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums at Gottorf Castle.

Following the project presentation, the representatives will be available for discussion and networking.
