Mirjam Manigel

Vita

Mirjam Manigel works as a research assistant at the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Foundation in Bonn and Berlin. During and after her studies in art and visual history and educational sciences, she held positions at various cultural institutions, such as Haus Bastian – Centre for Cultural Education. Her work focuses on topics such as cultural participation, participatory processes, inclusion and accessibility. She was involved in the project to redesign the Bonn permanent exhibition ‘You Are Part of History. Germany since 1945’, acting, amongst other things, as project lead for inclusive initiatives such as tactile orientation maps and objects, a digital navigation system and inclusive features in the media guide, as well as overseeing focus groups and programme development. The pilot projects carried out as part of the collaborative initiative and the ongoing exchange of knowledge led to the development of inclusive standards and strategies that guided the redesign from the very beginning.

Embedding inclusion in museums on a long-term basis. Lessons learnt and best practices from the Inclusion Network

Although there is a consensus that museums and exhibitions should be designed and realised with inclusivity in mind, putting this into practice remains a challenge. Generally speaking, all institutions face similar challenges. Over a period of four years, seven museums had the opportunity to work together on sustainable solutions for inclusive museum and exhibition design as part of a funded project. The results will be presented by representatives of the museums and subsequently discussed with the audience.
