Jörg Engster has been involved in the conception and design of digital media for more than thirty years: after studying graphic design at the University of the Arts Bremen and the Academie Minerva in Groningen, he initially worked in the ‘COINN’ research group. He subsequently founded the company ‘die InformationsGesellschaft’, whose product ‘xpedeo’ is one of the leading solutions in the field of mobile digital mediation. In his day-to-day work, Mr Engster supports renowned cultural institutions, international corporations and research organisations. He also regularly contributes to innovation projects (including those funded by the EU and the Leibniz Association). Furthermore, Mr Engster is actively involved in the field of design education through guest lectureships and as an assessor for the accreditation agency ACQUIN.

What if I’d lived 150 years ago? – A journey through time at the selfie station

If, after a visit to a museum, the public gains a better understanding of what life in times gone by would have felt like first-hand, then the educational aim has been achieved. A selfie station, which will be in use from December 2026 at the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer as part of the exhibition ‘Sisi – Misunderstood and Immortal’, provides a playful introduction to this. Anyone who has their photograph taken there will be virtually re-dressed using artificial intelligence, in accordance with the fashions of the Empress’s lifetime. Glasses, hairstyles and jewellery will also be adjusted accordingly. If visitors like the result, they can download the file to their own mobile phone via a QR code and share it as they wish.

Expectations are sky-high, and so is the potential for failure: AI can support teaching – and, at other times, provoke roars of laughter when it has once again been particularly ‘creative’. The talk uses real-world examples to highlight how artificial intelligence can be put to good use.
