Digital Transformation at the Universalmuseum Joanneum

Digitalisation is fundamentally transforming museums, not only in terms of educational outreach but also across the entire value chain, from collection objects to the digital visitor experience. This presentation outlines the digital transformation strategy of the Universalmuseum Joanneum (Graz, Austria) and demonstrates how a universal museum can strategically shape and organisationally embed digital transformation.
The focus is on the digitisation and networking of collections, ensuring data quality and long-term archiving, as well as the responsible use of artificial intelligence. This is complemented by current developments in the fields of gamification, digital exhibitions and innovative educational formats. Using specific examples – including the 2026 exhibition ‘BLOOM’ with its digital extensions and the mobile outreach project ‘Joanneum to go’ – the presentation demonstrates how digital technologies can enhance the museum visit, reach new audiences and make cultural heritage accessible regardless of time and place.
The lecture is aimed at museum professionals, cultural managers and decision-makers who view digitalisation not as an end in itself, but as a strategic tool for the further development of their institution and for sustainably strengthening the social relevance of museums.
