Sustainable, international, intercultural: ‘GreenMuseumHub’ connects Egypt, Germany and Tunisia

5:15 PM - 5:45 PM Thu, 05 Nov

Short description

The “GreenMuseumHub” network links the departments of Museum and Heritage Studies at the universities of Würzburg, Helwan (Egypt) and La Manouba (Tunisia) with 30 partner museums. From 2023 to 2025, it explored the theme of sustainability through conferences, networking trips and online lectures. To mark the end of the project, 37 students organised the pop-up exhibition ‘We Wanna Live!’. It is touring the partner countries and demonstrates, in an everyday context, how museums recycle resources, reduce CO₂ emissions and break down barriers.

Description

The ‘GreenMuseumHub’ refers to a tri-national network comprising the departments of Museum and Heritage Studies at the Universities of Würzburg (Germany), Helwan in Cairo (Egypt) and La Manouba in Tunis (Tunisia), as well as 30 partner museums. Through conferences and networking trips in the partner countries, as well as online lectures, the network explored the challenges and opportunities of environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability. To conclude the project, 37 students collaboratively developed the sustainable pop-up exhibition ‘We Wanna Live!’. The exhibition is touring the three countries and demonstrates, in a creative and relatable way and in the four project languages – Arabic, German, English and French – how cultural institutions recycle resources, reduce digital carbon footprints or break down barriers to social participation – often, global solutions do not work; instead, specific responses to regional challenges are required. What makes the “GreenMuseumHub. Sustainable Futures for Museums and Heritage Sites” project special is its intercultural approach based on equality, which views museums as active drivers of social change. It was funded from 2023 to 2025 by the “Ta’ziz Partnership – Networks” funding programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
