Designing for Accessibility – The Comprehensive Inclusive System at the Haus der Geschichte Bonn

1:00 PM - 1:30 PM Fri, 06 Nov

Short description

Accessibility and inclusion are not achieved through individual measures, but through a coherent overall system. Using the example of the new permanent exhibition at the Haus der Geschichte Bonn, this talk demonstrates how inclusive exhibition solutions can be integrated into the design, developed collaboratively and brought together to create a cohesive experience for all visitors.

Description

How can an exhibition be created in which accessibility and inclusion are not mere add-ons, but where design, wayfinding and accessibility naturally work together?

Using the example of the new permanent exhibition at the Haus der Geschichte Bonn, this talk demonstrates how inclusive exhibition solutions were planned right from the early planning phase, in tandem with the exhibition design and the wayfinding system. The focus is not on individual products, but on the interdisciplinary development process – from the initial concept through to implementation.

Using specific examples, inclusive educational elements such as tactile orientation plans, tactile exhibits, outdoor additions and multimedia links via tactile QR codes will be presented.

As one of Germany’s most visited museums, the Haus der Geschichte Bonn sets high standards for accessibility, wayfinding and practicality in everyday use. The talk provides practical insights and demonstrates why inclusion realises its greatest potential when it is seamlessly integrated into the overall system.
