The use of AI in museums: opportunities and risks

10:30 AM - 11:00 AM Fri, 06 Nov

Short description

Expectations are sky-high, and so is the potential for failure: AI can support teaching – and, at other times, provoke roars of laughter when it has once again been particularly ‘creative’. The talk uses real-world examples to highlight how artificial intelligence can be put to good use.

Description

Certainly, artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that makes many things possible – including in the field of education. And so digital media are now literally inundated with AI-generated content. Yet behind the glossy façade, the content conveyed is often rather trivial, if not downright questionable.

But what does the use of AI mean for museums? Do they gain significance for society as a whole because they can counter AI-generated facts as ‘guardians of the truth’? Or do museums lose credibility through the reckless use of AI? And how can the challenges relating to copyright, labelling requirements and distortions of content be adequately addressed?

The lecture uses real-world examples to highlight potential solutions to these questions.
