Tactile Studio is a design and production company with around 30 staff members that develops and manufactures inclusive educational resources for museums and cultural institutions – including tactile models, tactile maps, scent stations, audio experiences, interactive exhibits and multisensory elements. Inclusive design creates added value for all visitors – not just for people with disabilities. Drawing on practical projects, including those from the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and other museums, the talk demonstrates how multisensory educational programmes can lead to longer visits, greater interaction, more in-depth exchanges between visitors and a deeper engagement with exhibitions. At the same time, the concept of accessibility is explored in greater depth: in addition to visual impairments and blindness, the focus also shifts to different modes of perception as well as visitors’ varying physical, sensory and individual circumstances. The talk presents concrete approaches on how museums can design experiences that are accessible to as many people as possible and improve the overall quality of the visit.
