Christl Lidl

Christl Lidl is an independent XR artist with a PhD in Art and Art History. She explores virtual and augmented reality for culturalheritage preservation. In 2020, she developed Cinemachina VR, avirtual cinema museum prototype, followed by an AR application Cinémas de Bruxelles augmentés in 2021. Since 2023, she has been developing VR tools to remediate lost nineteenth-century panoramas. Her research was presented at the International Panorama Council's 2023 conference and published in the Panoramic and Immersive Media Studies Yearbook. In 2024, she received a CNC grant for Le Panorama de l’Histoire du Siècle.

A virtual reality art experience to rediscover a lost 19th-century panorama

The presentation focuses on the VR project Panorama of the History of the Century, a monumental painting created forthe 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. Through immersive virtualreality, archival photographs and 3D reconstruction, audiences will rediscover the panorama, follow its creation from sketch to finished work, and encounter the historical figures it depicts.The experience will offer a new way to explore this largely lostmasterpiece and understand its artistic and historical significance
