Interactivity alone is not enough

Interactivity is regarded as key to modern museum education. But is it enough to inspire visitors in the long term? Our talk challenges this assumption and shows why technical innovation alone does not create an unforgettable exhibition experience.

The focus is on the question of what people actually remember after a visit to a museum. Using specific practical examples from our projects – including an immersive projection at the Staatliches Museum Schwerin and a media station offering a virtual glimpse into the history of Fasnacht – we demonstrate how storytelling, characters and atmosphere create emotional experiences that linger in the memory. Why do children prefer to follow a curious little monkey and a clever owl rather than a touchscreen? And why are curiosity, excitement and identification often more effective than an ever-changing array of technical features? The talk invites you to rethink digital knowledge transfer – with people and their memories at the centre.
