Collection management as the cornerstone of digital transformation

Museums and cultural institutions face the challenge not only of managing their collections, but also of using them as the basis for comprehensive digitisation strategies. Drawing on specific real-world examples, this presentation demonstrates how a modern collection management system becomes the cornerstone of digital transformation.

The focus is on four key elements: 3D exhibition planning enables spaces and object displays to be virtually designed and optimised in advance. Barcoding and scanning apps significantly simplify the recording and movement of objects in day-to-day museum operations and ensure seamless traceability. The integration of webCMS and digital asset management creates end-to-end workflows between collection data and public presentation. This is complemented by the targeted use of artificial intelligence, which provides support with tagging, research and content creation (e.g. ALT text for accessibility).

Together, these building blocks form a seamless digital ecosystem – from the storage facility and the database right through to the public and educational outreach.
