Beauty and cultural splendor are often closely linked to health hazards that are not always apparent at first glance Toxic and hazardous substances are present in works of art and cultural heritage in a variety of ways. Many historical objects contain hazardous substances such as asbestos, lead, mercury or highly toxic color pigments. In other cases, toxic substances were introduced into the substance to combat insects or mold. Our speakers will shed light on some examples of this.
The series of lectures at the "denkmal" trade fair follows on from the first VDR conference in May, which provided important impetus for a responsible approach to our cultural heritage and our health. The series at the VDR stand will be complemented by an exhibition on the use of the highly toxic pigment "Schweinfurt Green" and a slide show illustrating that toxic substances can occur in a wide variety of monuments and collection items and require appropriate occupational safety.
