Museums allow their visitors to experience 'the real thing'; but how can visitors be encouraged to interpret objects in a way that relates to their own lives? In Interpret Europe, professionals from 48 countries are searching for answers to this question. The European Union honoured the results by awarding the Altiero Spinelli Prize to Interpret Europe's study 'Engaging citizens with Europe's cultural heritage'. Tibor Navracsics, Commisioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, said: "Through interpretation, I believe heritage can contribute to the building of communities, not just at local level, but also on national and European levels". The presentation will introduce Interpret Europe's contemporary model for heritage interpretation as well as Interpret Europe's programme to support museums in training their staff in meaningful guiding and writing, and in a way of planning that provokes resonance and participation.
