Press Release 3rd February 2010
MUTEC 2010
MUTEC – the International Trade Fair for Museum and Exhibition Technology will be held in Leipzig as a guest event at the same time as denkmal – European Trade Fair for Conservation, Restoration and Old Building Renovation from 18th - 20th November 2010.Beyond collection, conservation and research, museums have been assigned new tasks, a new cultural and educational role and also economic significance as a location factor:
In addition to their first class position in art and cultural education, museums are also places for learning and comprehending, communication and discourse, tranquillity, relaxation and contemplation, orientation and positioning, but also entertainment and interaction. Their economic significance lies in their flagship position – they are responsible for the image of cities and whole regions and appeal to tourists, innovative companies and highly educated employees.
Due to this development, modern museum management is confronted with new demands. MUTEC is going to reflect this diversity and wide range of an efficient museum infrastructure.
The central topics will be Museum Architecture, Building, Security, Environmental and Climate Technology, Fittings and Scenography, Visitor Service, Guidance Services, Ticketing, Audio, Multimedia, Interactive Systems, Museum Education, Storage and Archiving, Data Management as well as Research and Knowledge Transfer in a Digital World.
Museums between tradition and modernism: Main topic of the ancillary programme will be today’s digital challenges. New communication and information technologies, smartphone applications, social media like facebook and twitter, innovative forms of media presentation, techniques of the third dimension, immersive spatial experience, electronic showcases, ways of commercialising pictures and digital copyrights in a “cyber space museum”, the challenges of storing the global memory through digital archiving and much more make it necessary to set the course and offer new chances for finding and winning over visitors of the digital generation.
Emphasis will also be laid on lighting, a crucial factor for the emotional experience of buildings and exhibitions. The illumination of rooms, of exhibits in rooms, showcases or on walls, the combination of daylight and artificial light and last but not least the latest developments and regulations in lighting technology make a complex dialogue between architects, curators, constructors and lighting designers indispensable.
Christian Manhart, Chief of Museums and Cultural Objects Section of UNESCO, is going to talk about the topic “Museums in a globalized world” dealing with the worldwide activities in the field of museums and the possibilities of international networking and partnerships.
Museums are booming in Germany, during the last years more than 100 million visitors a year have been counted. Germany with its more than 8.000 museums is an ideal location for an international museum and monument technology trade fair. Especially during the current decade, a number of new institutions were opened – some of them innovative reference projects with great liberties for creativity and design ideas of star architects.
Numerous advantages and synergies will arise from the combination of denkmal and MUTEC: An immense, complementary range of exhibits, saving of time due to only one date and venue, contacts with experts from all significant areas of museum work and conservation and the encounter with Leipzig Trade Fair’s partner country which is internationally renowned for restoration: Poland.
